October 10th, 2023,
It has been a while since I have updated my blogspot, and just wanted to take some time and check in again.
The last few years have been full of changes, some wonderful, and some very sad. But life seems to go that way.
In 2022 we moved my very elderly father in with us and my art took a back seat position, as his care was most important at the time. I was able to do a few art related events and some teaching, but the majority of my time was spent with him. It was an absolute joy to spend everyday with him. He was funny, kind, had the most incredible stories of his long life, and I cherish every moment that I- we all got with him. Expect for some forgetfulness, He was still incredibly sharp and we had wonderful conversations. We celebrated his 100th birthday last November, we all had Christmas and New Year’s celebrations with him, and my kids ( all in their 30’s) are so grateful to have had those special memories added to all the other special memories they have of spending time with him throughout their lifetimes.
When he took his last breath and left this world in March of this year, he was surrounded by all of us, and that had been one of his wishes to be at home, with all of us, and we are so very grateful to have been able to give this wish to him. Before he passed away he made me promise to not stop painting, and to always follow my heart. It’s been hard since he’s been gone, I miss him immensely. I miss all the long talks, the laughter, and seeing his smile every morning when I would get him up and dressed for the day. He was always smiling, always saw life as glass half full, and was grateful for every day he was here.
I’ve started painting again, almost every day, and I feel like he’s pushing me on. I usually wear one of his old sweaters or shirts when I’m working and it’s like having him with me. I will keep the promise I made to him , and just keep painting, and painting, and painting! I always feel like a part of me is in every painting I create, and now I feel like there’s a little piece of my dad in my paintings as well. His spirit will live on through me in my work.
